The "over and under trestle"
part 1
What started out as an innocent conversation with Pete about what he wanted to do to the track, now that the two main bridges are complete has quickly turned into our most ambitious project yet. Pete thought it would be cool to have an Up & Over trestle just like a little train set. We all were amused by the thought, thinking he was joking..........will we ever learn? In the beginning of July, during the hottest and sometimes wettest month here in Florida, Pete began sinking the first posts in what will be a 750' wooden trestle. With the assitance of our resident track laing expert, Bruce, the two began laying out and sinking post after post. They were soon joined by Ron, who quickly realized why Pete and Bruce were wearing tall boots. To feed the ever growing need for more timber, Don busied himself tearing down more of the proerties old horse fencing. The previous owner, had separated the property into many horse paddocks using pressure treated 2x6 and 4x4's. The 2x6's have come in very handy as 2x3 ties. We will keep you updated on this project.
Ron, Pete and Bruce take a break from sinking the first of many 4x4 timbers for the new trestle. Note the boots, although the tall grass hides it, they are standing in 4" of water.
Here is where the track will cross over itself at a height of 5' over the lower rails. This should provide ample thrills for the brave engineers. We have a by pass planned for the less than daring.
Here is Don "the human dynamo" Pierson tearing down the old horse paddock fencing. The 4x4's will be used in the new trestle while Don will cut up the 2x6's into 2x3 ties.
